Protein: What is it, and why do we need it?
Protein is an essential nutrient that serves as fuel and a building block of the human body—it is found in muscles, skin, hair, bone, and other body parts and tissues.
Harvard’s School of Publish Health states, “[Protein] makes up the enzymes that power many chemical reactions and the hemoglobin that carries oxygen in your blood. At least 10,000 different proteins make you what you are and keep you that way.”
Protein comprises more than twenty building blocks, aka amino acids. Our bodies don’t store amino acids, so we either make them from scratch or we modify others. Nine amino acids must come from food, which is why protein is so important.
You can find protein in plant and animal-based foods, so regardless of your diet, you can consume this essential macronutrient.
